WAZA Commitment to Biodiversity Conservation

As members of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA), we recognise our collective responsibility and unique contributions to global conservation efforts. Our shared and ultimate mission as conservation organisations is to deliver positive conservation outcomes: preventing extinctions, reversing the decline of species, recovering populations, and leveraging our expertise to manage sustainable ex situ populations in support of these goals. We acknowledge that conservation is a shared responsibility and that effective outcomes are best achieved through aligned and coordinated efforts at national, regional, and global levels.

We, the members of WAZA, understand that effective conservation action is enhanced through systematic, measurable, and coordinated efforts across these levels. We view the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) Parties’ National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) as an opportunity to unify our community’s efforts and expertise towards a common strategy to halt extinctions and recover populations. Thus, we commit to aligning, to the best of our abilities, with the NBSAPs of the countries or regions where we conduct our conservation programmes, thereby enhancing our contributions to recovery-focused initiatives in support of our mission as conservation organisations and the goals of the Parties’ NBSAPs.

To further the effectiveness of our contributions to NBSAPs, we pledge to work collaboratively with National Focal Points both in our home countries and internationally. We recognise the potential and value of our involvement as Reverse the Red (RtR) supports the establishment of National Networks to catalyse and streamline conservation action to support countries delivering on NBSAPS particularly on Target 4 and Goal A of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. We recognise the potential and value of our commitment to recovery-focused actions for threatened species through the RtR Species Pledge, designed to understand which organisations, groups, and agencies are committed to specific strategic recovery actions for identified species in specific countries. We further recognise and support RtR’s role in promoting and positioning WAZA members’ efforts locally, nationally, and internationally in halting extinctions, reversing declines, and recovering species as defined by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)’s Global Species Action Plan and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.

We are committed to utilising and aligning our efforts with the resources developed by WAZA and, as WAZA members, to actively participate in our Association’s initiatives, including the future WAZA 2030 Conservation Goal, which will establish unified global guidance to measure and report on our community’s contributions to conservation, as well as building capacity to effectively contribute to global biodiversity conservation frameworks. The guidelines, strategies, and goals developed by WAZA embody the collective knowledge, experience, and ambitions of our association, as the representative of the global leading zoo and aquarium community.

We will foster a culture of openness and accountability by sharing both successes and strategies. This approach will inspire others and continuously enhance the impact of our community on conservation efforts.

As members of WAZA, we reaffirm our unwavering commitment to advancing global conservation through collaborative, strategic, coordinated, and measurable actions aimed at halting extinctions, reversing declines, and restoring populations. We pledge to support and accelerate our conservation efforts to continue delivering positive outcomes for biodiversity conservation.

The World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) is the global alliance of regional associations, national federations, zoos and aquariums, dedicated to the care and conservation of animals and their habitats around the world.
